Sahih al-Bukhari 5364 (Book 69, Hadith 14) #5138
Taking Necessary Property with Reasonableness

SUMMARY: Aisha narrates that Hind bint Utba asked the Prophet (ﷺ) if she could take from her husband's property without his knowledge, to which the Prophet (ﷺ) replied that she can take what is necessary for her and her children, as long as it is reasonable.

Narrated 'Aisha: Hind bint 'Utba said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Abu Sufyan is a miser and he does not give me what is sufficient for me and my children. Can I take of his property without his knowledge?" The Prophet said, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children, and the amount should be just and reasonable.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take only what you need and make sure it is reasonable when taking someone else's possessions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about taking of one's property without their knowledge. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if a person needs something from another person’s property, they should only take what is necessary and reasonable. This means that we should not take more than we need or ask for too much. We must also be mindful of how much we are taking so it does not cause any harm to the other person. It is important to remember this teaching when dealing with our own possessions and those of others in order to maintain justice and fairness in our dealings with each other.
