Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 (Book 70, Hadith 4) #5150
Eating with Right Hand and Mentioning Allah's Name

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of mentioning Allah's name and eating with the right hand.

Narrated 'Umar bin Abi Salama: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah's Messenger said to me, 'O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you". Since then I have applied those instructions when eating.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by 'Umar bin Abi Salama, who was a young boy under the care of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught him to mention the name of Allah before eating and to eat with his right hand. This teaches us that we should always remember to thank God for our blessings before consuming them, as well as using our right hands when eating or doing any other task. It also shows us that even small children can be taught important values from an early age. We should all strive to teach our children these values so they can grow up into responsible adults who are mindful of their actions and thankful for their blessings.
