Prohibition of Intoxicating Drinks

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that all drinks that intoxicate are unlawful and not good, while only lawful and good drinks are allowed.

Narrated Abu Al-Juwairiyah: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about Al-Badhaq. He said, "Muhammad prohibited alcoholic drinks before It was called Al-Badhaq (by saying), 'Any drink that intoxicates is unlawful'. I said, 'What about good lawful drinks?' He said,'Apart from what is lawful and good, all other things are unlawful and not good (unclean Al-Khabith).
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ الْبَاذَقِ،‏.‏ فَقَالَ سَبَقَ مُحَمَّدٌ الْبَاذَقَ، فَمَا أَسْكَرَ فَهْوَ حَرَامٌ‏.‏ قَالَ الشَّرَابُ الْحَلاَلُ الطَّيِّبُ‏.‏ قَالَ لَيْسَ بَعْدَ الْحَلاَلِ الطَّيِّبِ إِلاَّ الْحَرَامُ الْخَبِيثُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Al-Juwairiyah who asked Ibn 'Abbas about Al-Badhaq. Ibn 'Abbas replied that Muhammad prohibited alcoholic drinks before it was called Al-Badhaq, saying "Any drink that intoxicates is unlawful." He further clarified that apart from what is lawful and good, all other things are unlawful and not good (unclean Al-Khabith). This hadith teaches us the importance of avoiding any kind of drink which can cause intoxication as it is considered to be unlawful in Islam. It also emphasizes on the importance of consuming only what is lawful and good for our health.
