Sahih al-Bukhari 6137 (Book 78, Hadith 164) #5893
Taking the Right of a Guest

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that if we stay with people and they do not entertain us as they should, then we should take the right of a guest from them.

Narrated 'Uqba bin 'Amir: We said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You send us out and it happens that we have to stay with such people as do not entertain us. What do you think about it?" Allah's Messenger said to us, "If you stay with some people and they entertain you as they should for a guest, accept is; but if they do not do then you should take from them the right of the guest, which they ought to give".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous hosts when someone visits your home or asks for your help; provide them with whatever they need in order to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about hospitality and how to treat guests. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that if we stay with people and they do not entertain us as they should, then we should take the right of a guest from them. This means that when someone invites you to their home or offers you hospitality, it is important for them to provide you with what is necessary for your comfort and wellbeing. If this does not happen, then it is acceptable for you to ask for what is due to you as a guest. It also teaches us about being generous hosts ourselves; when someone visits our home or asks for our help, it is important that we provide them with whatever they need in order to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable. We must remember that hospitality has been an important part of Islamic culture since its inception; by following these teachings, we can ensure that our guests are treated well and feel welcome in our homes.
