Praising Allah Before Sleep and Upon Waking Up

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of praising Allah before going to sleep and upon waking up.

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet intended to go to bed, he would recite: "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live)". And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: "Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection)".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ‏"‏‏.‏ وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنْ مَنَامِهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا، وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of praising Allah before going to sleep and upon waking up. It is narrated by Hudhaifa that whenever Prophet Muhammad intended to go to bed, he would recite "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" which translates as "With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live". And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say "Al-hamdu lil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur" which translates as "All the praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection". This hadith emphasizes on praising God in all circumstances. It reminds us that we should be grateful for being alive even after sleeping because it could have been our last night on earth. We should thank God for giving us another day of life with its blessings.
