Sahih al-Bukhari 6328 (Book 80, Hadith 25) #6079
The Prayer of Salutations

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when one is praying, they should say "at-tahiyyatu lillahi" up to "as-salihin" and then recite the shahada.

Narrated 'Abdullah: We used to say in the prayer: 'assalam be on Allah, As-Salam be on so-and so'. So one day the Prophet said to us, "Allah Himself is As-Salam; when anyone of you sits during his prayer, he should say: 'at-tah, iyyatu-lillahi,' up to 'As-Salihin,' (All the compliments are for Allah's righteous people) for when he recites this, then he says his Salam to all the righteous people present in the heavens and on the earth. Then he should say, 'I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and His Apostle,' and then he can select whatever he likes to celebrate (Allah's) Praises".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the proper way to pray. When one is praying, they should begin by saying “At-tahiyyatu lillahi” which means “all compliments are for Allah” and continue until they reach “As-salihin” which means “the righteous people”. After this, they should recite the shahada which is a declaration of faith in Allah and His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. By doing this, we are sending salutations to all of the righteous people in heaven and on earth. We can then choose whatever we like to praise Allah with after that. This hadith teaches us that prayer is an important part of our faith as Muslims and it must be done properly with respect for all those who have come before us in faith.
