Sahih Muslim 96b (Book 1, Hadith 184) #7449
Respect for Life

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of respecting life and not taking it away even if someone has done wrong, as it is only Allah who can take away life.

It is narrated on the authority of Usama b. Zaid: The Messenger of Allah may peace be upon him) sent us to Huraqat, a tribe of Juhaina. We attacked that tribe early in the morning and defeated them and I and a man from the Ansar caught hold of a person (of the defeated tribe). When we overcame him, he said: There is no god but Allah. At that moment the Ansari spared him, but I attacked him with my spear and killed him. The news had already reached the Apostle (peace be upon him), so when we came back he (the Apostle) said to me: Usama, did you kill him after he had made the profession: There is no god but Allah? I said. Messenger of Allah, he did it only as a shelter. The Prophet observed: Did you kill him after he had made the profession that there is no god but Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) went on repeating this to me till I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect all lives regardless if someone has done wrong or not because only God can take away life when its time comes and we should never take matters into our own hands without His permission or guidance .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of respecting life and not taking it away even if someone has done wrong. It was narrated by Usama b. Zaid, who was sent on a mission with a man from the Ansar to Huraqat, a tribe of Juhaina. During their mission they defeated this tribe and Usama and his companion caught hold of one person from this tribe. When he said “There is no god but Allah”, his companion spared him but Usama killed him with his spear despite knowing that he had professed faith in Allah. When they returned back to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he asked Usama why he killed him after hearing his profession of faith in Allah? The Prophet ﷺ kept repeating this question until Usama wished that he hadn't embraced Islam before that day as an indication of how serious this matter was taken by the Prophet ﷺ . This hadith teaches us that we should respect all lives regardless if someone has done wrong or not because only God can take away life when its time comes and we should never take matters into our own hands without His permission or guidance.
