Question 419: According to Quran, the only name of Muslims is Muslim or Momin. I'm just wondering where the name Ahle-Sunit came from. Who invented this name and why?

419: Dear Br. M. As-Salaamu Alaykum Regarding your question, I don't know the exact date that the term Ahl-As-Sunna was given, but it is very old and was developped historically to differentiate the Ahl-as-sunnah from the Shiites and the Mu'tazila. The ahl-as-sunnah is known to follow the tradition (sunnah) of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) very strictly and is the section of Muslims who stays with the Jama'a or the group.
