Salaam, I just wanted to know if todays Christians and Jews are considered 'Ahl-e-kitab' or only a few of them. I know in the Quran it says that few of them still follow the straight path according to their message. Thanks.
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Dear questioner, we commend your keenness on getting your self well-acquainted with Islam and its teachings, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake. Christians and Jews are Ahl al-Kitab, that is, People of the Book, or people whose tradition is based upon a divinely revealed Scripture. Although they have distorted and altered it, they do possess a religion of divine origin, and hence they are Ahl-eKitab and Islam has made some exceptions in dealing with them. May Allah guard us all against the evil inclinations of our souls and help us to remain steadfast on the truth. Amen. If you have any further comments please don't hesitate to write back. Wassalam and Almighty Allah knows best. (Source: Islamicity)

Please explain by the phrase:"People of the book." Are they only Muslims, or Jews and Christians as well? Also, what is Islam's view on Jews and Christians. I heard that Jews are arrogant and Christians are ignorant. Where does it say that? Do we have anything against Jews and Christians? It is also known that there are different sects of Jeudism and Christianity like orthodox Jews and Christians and there are also Protestants and Roman Catholic Christians. When we say Jews and Christians, are we referring to all sects? Do we have the same opinion for all sects of each religion? ALso I have two teachers that are Jews I think or at leats one is; should I take any caution in any way?
Assalam 'Alaykum Wa Rahmatulahi Wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Dear brother, we are really pleased to have your question and to have the chance to convey some of the teachings of our religion to our Muslim brothers. Allah says: Christians and Jews are Ahl al-Kitab, that is, People of the Book, or people whose tradition is based upon a divinely revealed Scripture. Allah says about them in the Holy Quran: 5:13 And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts. They change words from their context and forget a part of that whereof they were admonished. Thou wilt not cease to discover treachery from all save a few of them. But bear with them and pardon them. Lo! Allah loveth the kindly. 5:14 And with those who say: "Lo! we are Christians," We made a covenant, but they forgot a part of that whereof they were admonished. Therefor We have stirred up enmity and hatred among them till the Day of Resurrection, when Allah will inform them of their handiwork. 5:18 (Both) the Jews and the Christians say: "We are sons of Allah, and his beloved." Say: "Why then doth He punish you for your sins? Nay, ye are but men,- of the men he hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and He punisheth whom He pleaseth: and to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between: and unto Him is the final goal (of all)" Allah says about them: 2:83 And (remember) when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, (saying): Worship none save Allah (only), and be good to parents and to kindred and to orphans and the needy, and speak kindly to mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor due. Then, after that, ye slid back, save a few of you, being averse. Jews and Christians don't believe in Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) and Quran. Jews and Christians are also divided in many sects. When we says Jews and Christians we mean all sects. You should be kind to all mankind and be firm in your Iman and belief. Wassalam and Allah knows best. (Source: Islamicity)

Question 5479

Salaam-u-alaikum, This is a follow up to question #5311. So, does that mean that they would enter Jannah? I have read hadiths concerning the Jews being cursed by Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) and that one has to believe in him and his final message in order to attain paradise in the hereafter. Some Imams say that Islam is the only religion accepted by Allah, and any other religions before it are replaced by it. I know all Prophets(peace be upon them all) brought the same message, but the people messed it up. What do you think about the topic? I guess, what I am trying to get across is that I understand the Ahl-e-kitab were right and followed the right path in their own time; but as time went along they corrupted it more and more. Even in the Quran, Allah curses Christians for giving him a son and the Jews for not following His commandments. I have another question, also. My brother wants to be an imam when he grows up, he is in high school right now. Do you know of any good universities or schools here in the states that would do the job right? Also, I am almost done with my Grad school, alhumdulillah, and want to enhance my deen-e-knowledge by taking some courses or classes. I have been learning on my own, but would want some structure--if possible. Any suggestions. Jazakullah!
Wa 'Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmatulahi Wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Dear brother, we are really pleased to have your question and to have the chance to convey some of the teachings of our religion to our Muslim brothers. Allah says: 4:123 Not your desires, nor those of the People of the Book (can prevail): whoever works evil, will be requited accordingly. Nor will he find, besides Allah, any protector or helper. 4:150 Those who deny Allah and His apostles, and (those who) wish to separate Allah from His apostles, saying: "We believe in some but reject others": And (those who) wish to take a course midway,- 4:151 They are in truth (equally) unbelievers; and we have prepared for unbelievers a humiliating punishment. 5:18 (Both) the Jews and the Christians say: "We are sons of Allah, and his beloved." Say: "Why then doth He punish you for your sins? Nay, ye are but men,- of the men he hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and He punisheth whom He pleaseth: and to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between: and unto Him is the final goal (of all)" 62:6 Say: "O ye that stand on Judaism! If ye think that ye are friends to Allah, to the exclusion of (other) men, then express your desire for Death, if ye are truthful!" 62:7 But never will they express their desire (for Death), because of the (deeds) their hands have sent on before them! and Allah knows well those that do wrong! 19:63 Such is the Garden which We give as an inheritance to those of Our servants who guard against Evil(Muttaqeen). Muttaqeen are those: 2:3 Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them; 2:4 And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter. 2:5 They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper. Read Quran and authentic hadiths with deep contemplation. Wassalam and Allah knows best. (Source: Islamicity)
