Question 318: or 33 years I denied the existance of god, because of this it was very easy to do many things that if I'd had a god I'd have been accountable Among the many things that happened was I became an alcoholic. Since entrying into a recovery program based on spirtiuality I have been able to accept god in my life and to surrender to his will. This I do many times a day. My question then is this...does the practice of the 12 steps as outlined in Alcoholics Anonymous parallel the concepts that I have read about in the Islamic Page and am I then considered a muslim (i.e. to surrender to the will of god is islamic, that those who do are called muslems)

Dear David: Greetings.. Since you believe in God and you surrender to His will, you are fulfilling the definition of a Muslim. However, to be a true practicing Muslim, you should learn and believe in the six articles of faith, and practice the five pillars of worship. The six articles of faith are: 1) To believe in Allah, the one and only true God, 2) to believe in the Day of Judgment or Meeting Allah and the life hereafter, 3) to believe in the Angels, 4) to believe in the Prophets, 5) to believe in the revelations of Allah to the Prophets, and 6) to believe in predestination (Qadar). The pillars of worship are: 1) declaration of faith: saying:' There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger, 2) Performing the five daily prayers, 3) giving the poor-due or charity (Zakat), 4) Fasting the month of Ramadan, and 5) Performing pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah. About the 12 steps outlined in Alcoholics Anonymous, I do not know them to give my opinion. Thank you. (Source: IslamiCity) Classified in Alcoholic >
