Question 2814: May Allah's peace and blessings be upon you. I have seen many new muslims become confused by local Imams' usage of Arabic Phrases throughout their sermons. From my imited knowledge, I understand that the only mandatory use of the Arabic language is during the prayers. I think what's most important during sermons is making sure everone completely understands the message being given. This can most effectively be done by speaking in the language of the people. Am I wrong? Please elaborate on this. matter.

Dear AH, As Salaam Alykum. It is important to communicate clearly so that everyone can understand the gist of the message. Often people in certain fields tend to use phrases that only those in the same field can understand. For example if you listen to two computer professionals talking; a non-computer person may think that they are talking a different language. When these same people talk to non-computer people they may use acronyms or phrases that are not understood in the non-computer world. This is a common communication weakness. When we are trying to communicate the meaning and concepts of Islam we should not assume a certain word or phrase to be commonly understood. Even the word Islam (Peace and Submission to the Divine order) should be translated and explained. At the same time to understand the essence of the word of God as given to us in the Quran we need to learn Arabic so that we can have a better understanding of the way to the right path. May Allah help all of us communicate the ultimate and absolute truth to all of humanity. MAA (Source: IslamiCity) Classified in Arabic language >
