Question 2392: Dear Sirs-- I have a question about the Qu'ran and Sunnah. The Qu'ran was the word of Allah related to the Prophet and then dictated and later assembled and approved by the Prophet. The Sunnah, although authenticated (spelling?) was not recorded in the presence of the Prophet, nor was it organized or approved under his direction. Therefore, my question two-fold: 1) How should the Sunnah considered in relationship to the Qu'ran. 2) Can the Sunnah really be viewed as strong source for the Holy Word of Allah, especially when compared to the Qu'ran. Can you shed some light on this. Thanks, Andrew King
Dear Mr. A. Greetings from Islamicity's Imam. What you are asking for is an extremely important subject that cannot be covered satisfactorily in this section simply because of the space limitation. However, we will try our best to shed some light on this matter. The authenticated Sunnah is an integral part of every Muslim's belief because the Qur'an itself orders the Muslims to follow it and abide by it. This is documented in several passages in the Qur'an such as in: Surah al-Imran (3) verse 32, and 132, Surah an-Nisaa (4) verse 59, Surah al-Maidah (5) verse 92, and in many other passages. Hence, while there is a clear differentiation between the Qur'an (which is divine and a revelation) and the Sunnah, a Muslim cannot disregard the Sunnah because he/she would be violating the Qur'anic order. In addition, the Sunnah clarifies many aspects of the Qur'an itself. For example, many rituals, such as prayers, fasting, pilgrimage etc. are explained in details in the Sunnah in such a way that without it, it would be unclear how to perform them. Also, there are many legal rulings which govern the Muslims' behavior that are extracted completely from the Sunnah. These include ethical, social, political, economic, and family relations. Of course, the authenticated Sunnah also stands as the second most important source of Islamic Jurisprudence after the Qur'an. If you need more information about this topic, either consult your local Imam, read a specialized book about this topic, or asks us again. Thank you for asking and God knows best.
