Question 2851: The fatwa declared By Ayatollah Khomeini in 1987 to Salman Rushdie,is it something that should be taken into consideration as an Islamic law or should it be taken as a mere command ?

Dear Br. M. As-salaamu alaykum. From an Islamic legal point of view, the fatwa of Ayatollah Khomeini is considered biding to any person who is able to execute it from among the Shiites only. Sunni Muslims are not bound to follow it because they dont adhere to the teachings of Imam Khomeini. The same thing applies, i.e., had the Fatwa been issued by a Sunni Imam, the Shiites dont have to follow him. Thank you for asking and God knows best.
