Topic: Khutbah in Arabic, Learning Arabic

Question 908: Would you say that it is a Sunnah of Rasulallah (SAS) to have the Khutba in Arabic? (Ref.Q115) How important do you think it is for a Muslim to learn Arabic? Should he be satisfied to memorize the parts that he prays in his prayers, and not make an effort to learn what he is reading? Also, just like you said we cannot substantiate the claim that the sermon should be in Arabic, can you substantiate the fact that the Khutbah was ever given in a language other than Arabic during and after the time of Rasulallah(SAS) As you can notice what I am leading to... that every Muslim should make an effort to learn the language of the Holy Qur'an.

Dear Br. E.: As-salaamu alaykum. Regarding your question, the issue of the Arabic language is deeper than simply saying that it is a Sunna to give the Friday sermon in Arabic, because if we insist on applying this Sunna, then a lot of non-Arabic speakers will not understand the speech and the purpose of the speech itself will be lost, because its purpose is to make people understand in any possible language, and not to sit and waste their time. This is of course different from the actual prayer that should be recited in Arabic. However, having said that, the Arabic language has merits over other languages, because it is the language which will be used in Heaven and people are rewarded to learn it and or teach it. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said 'love the Arabs for three reasons; because I am an Arab, the Qur'an is in Arabic and it is the language of the Heaven'. In addition Muslim scholars gave a juridical rulings to learn the Arabic language: Imam Shafi'i said 'every Muslim should learn the Arabic language up to his capacity to be able to perform his obligation', meaning the prayers. Therefore, the Arabic language should not be neglected at the expense of other languages. Thank you for asking and God knows best (Source: IslamiCity) Classified in Khutbah in Arabic, Learning Arabic >
