Topic: Kids: Providing Islamic Education to..

Question 3364: Asalamalaikum. I am very interested in my daughter and /or son to enter an Islamic school for hafiz program and to receive an Islamic degree. I live in the Houston area and the one school here only takes boys (which by the way I feel is very unfair) and anyway, they only teach memorization. I want it beyond that. I want them to understand Arabic etc. (I am a convert so my arabic is not good) my daughter is 8 and my son is 6. Maybe they are too young. I am not sure at what age they can start. I was wondering , do you know of any place in the states with a VERY GOOD reputation or even if I have to go overseas. My husband's family is in Pakistan. any scholarships available to any of the schools? May ALLAH reward you for any info.

Dear Sr. F. As-salaamu alaykum. First of all, may Allah bless you for your concern about providing your children with proper Islamic education. You should immediately approach your local Islamic Center and Muslim community about the policy of accepting only boys at the Islamic school, because this is a serious matter and all children have the right for proper Islamic education. Insha'Allah, God will help you in this endeavor and you will also get the reward for all of the education that the Muslim girls will benefit from when they were prohibited from acquiring it. If the funds are not available, find creative means of raising money. Talk to other members of the Islamic community because other families may have the same problem and may be waiting for the person who would take the initiative. As to your second question regarding a minimum age to start learning the Qur'an and Arabic, the sooner the better and there are children who start when they are 4 or 5 years old. Of course, the younger the child is, the slower the pace is, but it is important to start early. If you can team up with other families, hire a person to teach the youth Qur'an and Arabic. As to the issue of finding a good school, there are many good schools in the US (for youth) and many reputable Islamic Universities abroad. Please contact organizations such as ISNA (the Islamic Society of North America) to give you a listing of the available schools. Good luck. Thank you for asking and God knows best.
