Marriage in Islam is more than love and companionship. It is a relationship built on mercy, patience, good character and a shared journey toward Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a beautiful example of what it means to be a good spouse-and his teachings offer timeless lessons for building a stronger marriage.

1. Be good to your spouse. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family." A person's true character is often revealed at home, where there is no audience to impress.

2. Don't let flaws erase the good. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a believer should not completely reject their spouse because of one disliked quality, but should recognize the good alongside it. Every person has weaknesses, and a healthy marriage makes room for imperfection.

3. Choose mercy over winning. Allah describes marriage as a relationship of "affection and mercy" (Qur'an 30:21). Not every disagreement needs a winner. Sometimes protecting the relationship matters more than proving who is right.

4. Never stop appreciating each other. Over time, the things our spouse does for us can become invisible. Gratitude keeps love alive. A simple "thank you," a kind word or acknowledging someone's effort can transform the atmosphere of a home.

5. Become the spouse you want. Instead of constantly asking, "What does my spouse need to change?" ask, "What can I change?" The Prophetic example reminds us that being a good spouse begins with our own character, patience and actions.

A happy Muslim marriage isn't necessarily one without disagreements. It is one where disagreements don't destroy mercy, where mistakes don't erase appreciation, and where both spouses continue trying to become better for the sake of Allah.

Perhaps the secret to a lasting marriage isn't finding the perfect spouse-but becoming the kind of spouse you would want to have.
