I looked into this forum as I just read in another forum that Aisha wrote that perhaps you should ignore this Sandra. I thought this seemed a little harsh at first but now I fully agree! Reading this thread I now know that she does not listen.

I (a non-muslim westerner) have come here to get the facts. I could go to many places to read about Islam but I want to hear from real Muslims, not just read about the faith in a sterile way. I hear your passion and your well founded argument, and I feel your despair that people are not even trying to understand or listen to what you have to say. I wish it to be known that not all non-muslim westerners are as closed minded as Sandra.

What I have learned about Islam so far makes a lot of sense to me.

I really liked this:

I am a Muslim woman
by Jenn Zaghloul

    I am a Muslim woman
Feel free to ask me why
    When I walk,
    I walk with dignity
    When I speak
    I do not lie

    I am a Muslim woman
Not all of me you'll see
    But what you should appreciate
Is that the choice I make is free

    I'm not plagued with depression
    I'm neither cheated nor abused
    I don't envy other women
    And I'm certainly not confused

    Note, I speak perfect English
Et un petit peu de Francais aussi
    I'm majoring in Linguistics
So you need not speak slowly

I run my own small business
Every cent I earn is mine
I drive my Chevy to school & work
And no, that's not a crime!

You often stare as I walk by
    You don't understand my veil
But peace and power I have found
As I am equal to any male!

    I am a Muslim woman
    So please don't pity me
For God has guided me to truth
    And now I'm finally free!

    (c)1999 Jenn Zaghloul

It should be more widely read by non-muslims. I will to show it to my friends. Thank you for posting it.

    Hoping to learn more

    Peace,

    Clara

PS! As a woman, I feel the pressure of our western society as outlined in the poem above. I am not of any particular religion/faith but I believe in the concept of a creator. I am searching, you could say. Anyway, I feel this creator would not want us to feel unhappy with our looks, to dwell on our waist size, our 'earthly' beauty. He loves us as we are, I am sure of that.

Sandra I am an Australian and I know just as you know that you are pulling punches here.

Sandra your allegations against Muslims based on few experiences with some Muslim women are exasperating. Your posts seem to indicate that you are the saviour of Muslim women and it is Islam that is driving men to treat their women in the manner that they are alleged to being treated (badly or whatever). But first of all the book on which you started this topic is a hoax and Norma Khouri is a fake. Here is some info about Norma Khouri whose main intention is to discredit Islam.

Khouri - the troubled life of a fake

Norma Khouri was a fugitive not from Jordan but from a life of shady deals and tempestuous family relations, report Malcolm Knox and Caroline Overington.

In September last year, Norma Khouri wrote a long letter to Amal al-Sabbagh, the Jordanian women's rights activist who was questioning the authenticity of Khouri's book, Forbidden Love, about the so-called honour killing of Khouri's best friend Dalia.

Khouri wrote: "On a personal note, I hope and pray that no woman that you care for and love is ever taken from you in this way, but I do believe that you cannot truly understand my motivation unless you find yourself in my shoes, and I am truly offended by your request to label Forbidden Love as fiction."

At another point she wrote: "Bring Dalia back to life and then I will agree to call this story fiction. Forbidden Love is a memoir. It is my memoir, documenting my life and my memories and feelings and experiences. I do not believe that I am in any way misleading anyone."

We now know that Khouri misled everyone who read and believed her book, which was published in the US under the title Honor Lost. Dalia did not exist, because Khouri was not in Jordan when the events of the book - covering Khouri's childhood and young adulthood - took place. Forbidden Love is a fiction written by a woman who lived in Chicago from the age of three, and who left that city in 1999, when the FBI wanted her for questioning over a series of possibly criminal property transactions.

There is a lot of information available about this fake on the web. Sandra you also rely on very dubious sources of information mostly from (non-Muslim sources) some of whom are working mainly towards demonising Islam. For example that Silas website you refer to is a christian who claims converting many Muslims to Christianity. Their method of operating is to get hold of some weak or ignorant Muslims and exploit them, demonise Islam. We all know that there are many Quran translations by Christians and Jews. Those who are bent on demonising Islam get hold of these translations and use it for their evil purposes. In fact I have heard of a Christian church who conducts seminars on Islam in Australia and this church has been asked by the courts to apologise to the Muslims for some of their statements.

None of you would ever know how much I am learning from this forum. How much I owe to the wisdom, the spirit and the knowledge of my friends here.

How would I ever find the words to thank you for really making me feel as a part of a whole universe?

And, how would I ever thank Him for His kindness of granting me these few moments to know you?

Do I still need to spell out how I loved being in this string.

Let's make peace with Sandra and let her feel the truth and measure the reality. We could save her from the mere spin.

Sorry I did not mean to attack Sandra, I am sure she has seen some awful things happening and it has obviously hurt her. I am juat a bit exasperated (good word Maryga!) that she did not seem to listen to any of you. She should understand however that domestic violence unfortunately happens in many households accross the world, regardless of faith, culture or race. Women attack men also.

I agree though, Whisper, we should make peace with her. Hopefully, she has learned that not all Muslims are violent like the husbands of the women she encountered. You all seem like a friendly bunch to me!

Aisha, thanks for the offer to answer my questions though you may wish you hadn't asked! I have many! Did you have a 'religion' before Islam? What attracted you to Islam? There's two for a start!

Whisper, perhaps you can explain about mortgages. I know that Muslims have to have special mortgages and that it is something to do with not getting interest/ paying interest...

Thanks and peace!

Clara
